Support Food Sovereignty on the Wind River Reservation

The mission of the Wind River Food Sovereignty Project is to increase access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food on the Wind River Reservation. The project started in 2018 out of discussions between community members, food producers, and tribal health organizations interested in addressing issues of food insecurity, high rates of diet-related disease, and lack of sovereignty over our foodways. The project was designed to shift ownership of our food system back to the community itself. Our programs are focused on supporting Indigenous food producers (including growers, gatherers, fishers, hunters, ranchers) in developing viable food businesses. community-based food production also works towards decolonizing our diet, by taking steps to move away from westernized or commodity-oriented foods. Increasing both economic opportunity for food production and the food supply itself shifts control over our foodways back to the community and helps our community members gain more control over their own health and well-being.
